In a significant development ahead of next year's national polls, two prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance emerges in the wake of widespread and deadly young people's protests that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the ouster of the incumbent government.
A Commitment to Tackle Youth Concerns
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially vowed to focus on the issues raised by the new generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-graft unrest that occurred in September, which led to significant loss of life.
"Consensus must not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was finalized.
The September uprising was triggered by public frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a catalyst for underlying discontent stemming from years of economic stagnation and longstanding allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics.
Details of the Fresh Electoral Agreement
According to the official pact, the roles for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political leadership. He has in the past served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central figure in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He played a role in forming the interim government that took over after the ousted administration was dissolved.
Broader Political Discussions Underway
In a related event, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with several major political leaders. These talks involved ex- prime ministers and the presidents of other mainstream parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the uprising.
Following these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to state that holding a credible election is a shared responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and fear-free environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
