Around fifty automobiles have been smeared with what appears to be blood from a person in the Germany's municipality of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, according to law enforcement.
Cars, walls and postal boxes were marked, occasionally with prohibited symbols, they reported in a release.
Police state they were notified during the night on Wednesday night, when a resident discovered that a vehicle in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been marked with a reddish liquid.
The fluid had been placed in the shape of a swastika, they reported.
Officers then located multiple other marked automobiles and residential walls in the nearby vicinity.
Nazi symbols are prohibited in Germany under legislation prohibiting the public display of symbols from the Nazi era.
Law enforcement say preliminary tests suggest the substance was likely human blood.
"There is still no clue as to its origin; authorities are currently not aware of any injuries in relation with the event," they commented.
Local authorities said they were attempting "to solve the incident" and have requested to the public for tips.
A high-ranking representative said the incident made him stunned and needed to be resolved quickly.
"This act affects the very heart of Hanau and reopens the trauma of the right-wing attack half a decade ago," he stated on online, mentioning the murder of nine victims by a shooter focusing on people of immigrant origin in 2020.
